March 14, 2018- IMMERSION, an environmental short-film project by new directing duo Alexis Sepkovic & Pele Kudren, features the debut of VADA Jewelry’s SEA Collection against the backdrop of California’s largest lake and under-publicized ecological disaster, The Salton Sea. Inspired by VADA’s use of pearls, this multimedia piece focuses on the context of water in today’s modern age and brings awareness to the location’s particular man-made crisis as a microcosm of humanity’s own self-inflicted devastation.
The film, shot by Cristina Dunlap, opens with a horrified Venus, ancient
goddess of beauty and fertility, as she awakens in a barren desert and
contaminated lake beyond any sign of repair. The haunting visuals of her
divine rebirth and subsequent failed attempts to replenish the earth’s
vitality is accompanied by an original score from Jade Summers and Cat Power’s Nico Turner . The screenplay transitions through emotional costume changes as a metaphor for Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ “7 Stages of Grief”- beginning with shock and denial (pink), an arch of anger and depression (red), reflection (silver) and finally transcendance (black) that leaves the viewer hopeful for humanity’s own rehabilitation of our Earth. All photography has been taken by internationally published artist Katy Shayne. Wardrobe has been provided by H.Lorenzo Los Angeles.
The Salton Sea’s unnatural development and subsequent decline has been a topic of concern for local ecologists and politicians alike since its creation in 1905, as a result of a failure by engineers of the California Development Company to irrigate the area. Once a resort paradise for lake vacationers referred to as “Mecca”, this 350 square mile toxic sea now continues to shrink because of changes in water apportionments agreed upon under a farm-to-city water transfer deal in 2003. The sea’s increasingly high salinity content and agricultural runoff, trapped by a lack of outflow and now minimal inflow, has caused many of its fish to die off in mass quantities and its unique avian biodiversity to migrate elsewhere. The U.S. Geological Survey describes The Salton Sea’s decaying smell as "objectionable", "noxious", and “pervasive”. It’s shrinking wetlands are expected to repeat the fate of Kazakhstan’s Aral Sea which resulted in plains covered with salt and toxic chemicals, dust storms, and numerous cases of respiratory illnesses and infectious diseases that would similarly spread via wind from San Diego to Los Angeles.
